KAAFILA is supposedly a story of illegal immigrants and unscrupulous agents who lure Indians with dreams of earning big bucks in their eyes. llegal immigration/human trafficking is a global issue. We’ve read newspapers and watched news-reports on news channels highlighting the plight of millions of people who, in the hope for a better future, entry a country illegally.
A group of 200 people from different parts of India begin their journey to England on fake visas. And the route they take is the notorious ‘kabootar’ track which sees them trekking through cold Ukrainian jungles and unfriendly Russian snow fields, before they get embroiled with the Russian mafia and end up on an ill-fated boat to Malta.
Not wanting to turn it into a dry, grim and disturbing movie, Amitoj Maan packs in songs and glamour to strike the right balance between enlightenment and entertainment. The portions depicting reality are watchable since the issue hasn’t been highlighted in detail on the Hindi screen. But the romantic track [Sunny - Polina and Amitoj - Monalisa] stands out like a sore thumb. Also, the narrative tends to get lengthy in the second hour as the kaafila moves aimlessly from one country to another. A shorter duration would’ve only helped.
